2025 Playwriting Every Day in November - Day 18

Challenge #18 - Phrases That Could Lead You Anywhere

DAVID

I’ve already told you everything I know.

AMANDA

Okay, well, let’s go over it again because your story and Brandon’s isn’t adding up so we want to make sure we know exactly what happened.

DAVID

I just don’t know what else I can tell you.

AMANDA

You don’t need to tell me anything different, just tell me what happened again, starting with after you, Brandon, and Jenny left the restaurant.

DAVID
How many times–

AMANDA

Listen, I know it’s difficult to think about, but this is for you as much as it is for her. To get justice for Jenny we need to know what happened leading up to her disappearance.

DAVID

And I’m not under arrest? I can leave if I want to?

AMANDA

Of course, but listen, if you leave my lieutenant might think you have something to hide and go after you, get warrants, tell us to come get you at work. It’ll be better for all of us if you just tell us what happened one more time right now and then I can show my boss that you really were just where you said you were and we gotta start looking for who really did this.

DAVID

Okay. Just one more time though! I’ve been here too long already.

AMANDA

Just one more time.

DAVID
We left the restaurant, Brandon went left. He lives in the opposite direction than us. Jenny and I went right. I said I’d walk her home, she said we should take a walk in the park, she had something to tell me. We crossed into the park and, well, it’s private what we talked about, but the rain started and then we said to argue about heading in because of the weather.

AMANDA

That’s what the witness overheard? They heard her saying “I have somewhere to go”

DAVID

Yeah. And I said, well, where do you have to go, I’ll walk you there. Let me get you an umbrella at least and she said she was in a hurry.

AMANDA

Even though she was the one that wanted to take a detour through the park?

DAVID

Yeah, I brought that up. Why go out of our way if she was in such a hurry and she just kept repeating that she had somewhere to go, right now, and that she loved me and she’d see me soon.

AMANDA

Was that like her? To say she loved you?

DAVID

I don’t know. It wasn’t totally out of character, but it was weird in the context.

AMANDA

The context being?

DAVID

I don’t know. Why are you still talking to me? If Brandon’s story is so different, go talk to him! Let me go or tell me what you want to know.

AMANDA

Okay, David. I want to know why Jenny’s phone shows a call to Brandon when she was supposed to be walking in the park with you. I want to know why the suede shoes you supposedly wore that night didn’t show any signs of water damage and I want to know why you keep on saying you were just friends with Jenny when it’s clear you had some kind of crush on her and kept writing her love letters even after she told you she had no interest in you in that way.

DAVID

I want a lawyer.
