2025 Playwriting Every Day in November - Day 17

Challenge #17 - Period Piece

[Backstage at a high school theater/auditorium. KAYLA is in a pioneer outfit with a cellphone. She is in the middle of a text battle when JEWEL, the stage manager, comes over]

JEWEL
Kayla, there weren’t any cell phones in the 1800s.

KAYLA
There also weren’t polio vaccines, but all of us are walking around so not all that historically accurate, is it?

JEWEL
Why aren’t you taking this more seriously? What’s so important on your phone you’ll risk missing your cue.

KAYLA
That’s none of your business, Jewel.

JEWEL
As the stage manager, it actually is.

KAYLA

Please. The only reason you’re the stage manager is because Mr. Garrick felt guilty you weren’t musically inclined enough to be in the chorus.

JEWEL

That’s not true.

KAYLA
Oh, right. It’s because of your extensive tech experience.

JEWEL
Just don’t miss your cue. And leave your phone backstage! I don’t want Mr. Hooper to yell at me.

KAYLA

Whatever.

[goes back to her phone]

JEWEL

I’m in voice lessons. To increase my range. I’m not musically uninclined, just untrained.

KAYLA

[not looking up]

Whatever you need to tell yourself.

JEWEL

And I am good at this. Stage managing. I wouldn’t have been picked if it wasn’t competent at it.

KAYLA

Sure.

JEWEL
We’re about two minutes out from your cue.

KAYLA

Thank you, two minutes.
