Playwriting Every Day in November - Day 2

Day 2 Prompt: O Superman

[Lights up on ANGIE with a CB radio]

ANGIE

Breaker, breaker, 1- niner is anybody out there?

[pause, radio static]

Sending out a call to anyone still with us, is anyone still with us?

[pause, radio static]

In Corn patch, just south of Beer Town, on a fox hunt or hoping for a fox? Is that right? Looking for a driver with room for one more. In a roadside eat em up, alone. Plenty of grub to share and green stamps for whatever they’re worth now. Trying to make my way to Mardi Gras. Anyone heading south?

[pause, radio static]

Hello?

[pause, radio static]

Hello?

[pause, radio static. ANGIE, exhausted starts to fall asleep]

Breaker, breaker 10- 10 twenty? 10 ten? I’m listening please…

[ANGIE succumbs to slumber after a few beats of static, lights dim, times passes,  voice comes through]

CHRIS

Breaker breaker, One - Niner. Pumpkin from the patch, heading to The Bubbly. Anyone out there?

[Lights come up on CHRIS. They are in their truck’s cab]

Anyone in this corn patch? Anyone anywhere?

[Lights dim further on ANGIE, radio static]

Looking for a hitcher or an alligator or just someone to talk to other than myself.

[Radio static]

Anybody still out there? You don’t have to say anything more than copy just let me know you are there.

[Radio static]

Is this the way the world ends? Not with a whimper but with static?

[Radio static]

10-4. Signing off.

[Lights out on CHRIS. Static continues, paired with the sound of a truck crashing into a tree. Death by crash to escape the static. More static. ANGIE stirs.]

Hello? Breaker? Anyone? I fell asleep but I’m still here. Please.

[static. Lights out]

[Lights up on LYN, her own CB radio. She is dressed for a warmer climate.]

LYN

For those just getting the signal this is Mardi Gras Radio, coming to you from the Garden District with all your Orleans news. This ain’t no alligator station yall so if you have something to say, go on and say it. Questions to ask, go on and ask it.

Messages from the masses are read out at 4 and 6 so if you are waiting for a missed connection just wait a little longer and while we wait, I’m going to play some New Orleans jazz to keep the airwaves rolling, copy?

[LYN places a record on the player next to the radio and plays upbeat swing music]

And remember as long as the music is playing someone is listening
