2025 Playwriting Every Day in November - Day 12

Challenge #12 - The Weight

[Alarm clock goes off. SABRINA, in bed, turns it off. Deep breath in, deep breath out, and then she starts to get up. DEPRESSION and REGRET hold on to her making every movement a struggle, like moving through molasses. Out of bed, already exhausted again, SABRINA gets ready for the day with DEPRESSION and REGRET hanging on her, blocking her way, doing everything they can to make her life difficult. As SABRINA starts to exit, MINOR INCONVENIENCE stands in the doorway. It’s too much. SABRINA cries out and lets DEPRESSION and REGRET drag her back to bed. Once she’s collapsed, D, R, and MC dog pile on top of her. The phone rings. SABRINA, still awake but is unable to go get it lets it go to voicemail. ]

RECORDING

Please leave a message after the beep and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

BOSS

[off stage]

Sabrina? This is Logan. I’m calling to inform you that due to your third no call no show we are going to be terminating your employment with us effective immediately. Security will clear out your locker and your last paycheck will be mailed to you. I’m sorry this has to happen and I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

[With the ending of the voicemail, DREAD comes on to join the dogpile. SABRINA softly cries as the weight smothers her to sleep.]
